WordPress.com or WordPress.Org
When it comes to blogging, we have plenty of platforms ( websites in layman's term, website builders in a beginner's language, CMS's in an IT guys language ). Here are a few
- WordPress
- BlogSpot
- Squarespace
- Wix
- Tumblr
- …and many others…
But you know what, one of the massive confusions today is WordPress.com or WordPress.Org? Surprising, but true.. Yeah, a few who got this right, frowned a bit.. How it works?
WordPress.com will let you start your blog for free, and you don’t need to spend anything on Hosting or Domain. The benefit is,
- easy set up;
- a few steps, and your blog will be up and running,
- don’t have to worry about maintenance,
- free upgrades,
- managed security, etc, etc.
WordPress.org is good for creating blogs and even Websites. WordPress.org offers
- WordPress software, which you need to install somewhere,
- buy hosting services from somewhere,
- do the configuration part,
- manage databases,
- manage any updates,
- spam will play with you ( and you can play back with spam with the numerous plugins available), etc, etc..
- better SEO (Search engine optimization)
So wheres the fun?
With self-hosted WordPress.org blogs and sites, you can
- upload custom themes ( there are thousands of themes out there, free and premium ),
- install any plugin ( official or any custom made plugin by developers ).
- have full control over the PHP code ( the programming language behind WordPress), and if you know PHP, then you can change whatever you want.
Both are good, Which one is for me?
It all comes down to the way you intend to use it, and your purpose.
But, if you plan on creating a blog for making money, for a business, then WordPress.org is the one to go for. You have complete control on your blog. Though, initially hosting and maintaining your blog might sound like a task, but with the awesome tutorials and WordPress community support, anyone with or without technical skills can GeThru it.
Moral of the story...
Go, get your hand on, on WordPress.com, see what you can make, see how you feel. If all good, invest and get a full blown WordPress.org setup...
